Dobbies partners with DS Smith Recycling for waste management
Dobbies has appointed DS Smith Recycling to oversee recycling and waste management at its 32 UK stores.
DS Smith will introduce the recycling of mixed materials such as paper, cardboard and plastics, as well as closed-loop recycling so that all green waste will be turned into compost for use in Dobbies products.
The company is also running a trial to determine the commercial viability of separating food waste in its cafes for use in anaerobic digestion - the breakdown of organic materials into methane, carbon dioxide and fertiliser.
DS Smith is headquartered in Caerphilly, south Wales.
Dobbies sustainability manager Richard Jardine said: "We are very keen to reduce our environmental impact. As a national chain of garden centres, we generate a wide range of materials and, until now, identifying a solution for each waste stream was difficult."
He added: "As our recycling partner, DS Smith Recycling is able to help us identify ways to reduce waste and deal with what we do produce in the most sustainable and, importantly, cost-effective way."
