DIY Retailers see extra bank holiday peak

DIY stores such as Wickes can expect to record extra sales over the two bank holiday weekends at the end of April as the prospect of warm weather tempts people into making purchases, it has been claimed.

According to the Financial Times, retailers usually experience three 'peaks' at this time of year, caused by Easter and the two May bank holidays.

However, it suggested that this year may see a fourth surge in sales caused by the extra holiday many people will receive due to the royal wedding.

It noted that a positive weather forecast is driving demand for items such as garden furniture, barbeques and plants, although the publication added it remained to be seen whether overall sales would be boosted, or if the bank holiday will simply bring forward purchases that usually take place in May.

Those looking to take on home improvement tasks over the two long weekends were recently warned by the Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents to remain safe, as around 200,000 people a year will be forced to go to hospital after a DIY mishaps.
