Crown Paints Packaging Shortlisted For Illustration Award

Crown Paints PAPERFACE

The packaging for Crown Paints’ iconic Walls & Ceilings range has been shortlisted for a World Illustration Award, thanks to the work of Leeds-based designer and illustrator Abi Langridge – AKA PAPERFACE.

Organised by the Association of Illustrators (AOI), the World Illustration Awards is a prestigious competition, which aims to unearth talented artists and celebrate creative trends.

Crown commissioned PAPERFACE to design its Walls & Ceilings can in 2022. The challenge for PAPERFACE was to create a can which brought Crown’s brand purpose of empowering people to paint their own possible to life, encouraging customers to add character and their personality to their walls with bold, brave and beautiful colour choices. She achieved this using playful illustrations of people decorating, against a backdrop of clouds and rainbows.

PAPERFACE is a British illustrator, who recently returned to the UK after spending a number of years working in New York. Other projects she’s worked on include creating the illustrations for The Daily Telegraph’s wine column, and ‘Tap! Ding! Clap! Sing! – a children’s song book commissioned by Art Forms Leeds.

Speaking on the nomination, PAPERFACE said: “The World Illustration Awards are something that designers follow closely when searching for inspiration. I’m absolutely thrilled to have been shortlisted.

“I had a lot of fun re-thinking what a paint can should look like. Crown’s ‘It’s not just paint, it’s personal’ strapline message also chimed with me. As an illustrator, it was exciting to work on a project which aimed to inspire people to pick up a brush and get creative.”

Katie McLean, Marketing Director UK & Ireland at Crown Paints said: “This shortlisting is a testament to the brilliant work of PAPERFACE and the wider Crown Brand and Product team. From the moment we saw PAPERFACE’s initial designs, it was clear she completely understood what we were trying to achieve.

“A real demonstration of the power of branding, we’ve seen the design have a significant impact on customer response to the product. PAPERFACE developed a design that stands out on the shelf and inspires people to get creative with their living environments and paint their own possible.”
