Byggmax Study On Swedish Home Improvement Trends

  • Do-it-yourself in focus when the Swedes build

For the fifth year in a row, Byggmax releases its annual survey from KANTAR SIFO, which maps construction and renovation trends among Swedes. Despite increased monthly costs, eight out of ten plan to build or renovate, but they take on fewer and smaller projects. To save money, more people choose to do it on their own.

Just over every second Swede has shelved one or another construction project in the past year, and just as many answer that it has become more expensive than expected with tradesmen. Undeniably, the economy has been an important factor for households recently. Despite this, almost half state that plans to build or renovate have not been affected. As many as seven out of ten choose to build themselves instead of hiring craftsmen (+9 percent compared to 2021).

The garden is then the place where most feel safe to carry out the projects. Swedes have less self-confidence in the bathroom. There, 36 percent state that they feel safe doing the projects themselves.

- We see a clear trend that more and more people are choosing to fix things up at home and there is clearly money to be saved by building yourself, says Elliot Lindberg, Sweden manager at Byggmax.

More fun to build together
The construction report, which is based on a Sifo survey, also shows that construction is at its best when you do it together. Three out of four found that the project became more fun and educational when they built together with a friend, and 40 percent of those who build with their children experience a clearly improved relationship.

My advice is to dare. Get started with your project. Nine out of ten are satisfied with the result when they have built or renovated themselves, says Elliot Lindberg, Swedish manager at Byggmax.
