Bunnings dealt blow by UK Intellectual Property Office

It looks like Bunnings are going to have to live without their famous slogan “Lowest prices are just the beginning’’ after the UK Intellectual Property Office (IPO) refused the company's application to register its strapline for use in the UK.

The key strapline “Lowest prices are just the beginning’’ as well as  “Lowest prices everyday” were both refused by the IPO, due to the slogans being classed as 'too general'.

In Australia, Bunnings won an argument with the Australian Examiner when it tried to register “Lowest prices are just the beginning’’.

This decision comes as a significant blow to Bunnings, who will now have to find another slogan to represent their every day low price offer and differentiate themselves from B&Q.

Wesfarmers owned Bunnings, is in the process of rejuvenating the Homebase business and has been lodging a portfolio of trademarks. In addition, some of Bunnings’ suppliers have also registered names with the UK Intellectual Property Office, including Taubmans paints, owned by US chemicals conglomerate PPG, and bathroom and heating ranges Caroma, Stylus, Fowler and Dorf, which are owned by Australian company GWA Group.
