British men admit that they are useless at DIY

Many women often suspect their partners are just being lazy when it comes to DIY around the house. But the modern man simply cannot do basic jobs because he doesn't have the skills, according to a survey.

Fifty per cent admitted they are hopeless at practical chores with nearly two-thirds saying they did not enjoy doing tasks at home.

The most common jobs left undone are painting cracked walls, gardening, filling plaster cracks, putting up shelves and regrouting.

Nearly 20 per cent of British men would rather let their home fall into disrepair than do the jobs themselves with 42 per cent claiming long working hours were to blame for failing to finish chores. And 36 per cent confess this causes an argument with their partners.

The survey by B&Q found that men spent just 10 per cent of their leisure time on DIY and leave doing tasks for 33 days.
Four in ten said they would need training to acquire the practical skills of their fathers and grandfathers.

Now B&Q has a choice of over 20 DIY classes at its You Can Do It centres in 15 stores across the country.

Marketing director Katherine Paterson said ; “B&Q is on a mission to make DIY easier and bring back the skills that anyone can try, men, women and children.

'We want to give the nation the skills and confidence to DIY like our grand parents did.'

Company ambassador George Clarke, presenter of the renovation TV programme The Home Show, said:' Many people just don’t have the skills they need to complete simple DIY jobs at home, but now is your chance to learn.

'Whether you need to paint your front room, mend that leaky tap in the bathroom or tile your floor – you will find a class for you.'
