B&Q and Morrisons strike a deal over Altrincham store
PLANS have been unveiled to close B&Q’s store in Broadheath - and open a Morrisons supermarket on the site.
Retail giants B&Q and Morrisons have exchanged contracts on the deal.
B&Q has informed employees at its Altrincham store of its intention to close its store at Atlantic Street/Manchester Road in Broadheath - with the loss of 70 jobs.
Morrisons intends to open a foodstore there, which the firm says will provide 220 jobs.
B&Q will back the planning application for a Morrisons store.
The agreement between B&Q and Morrisons comes a month after Asda submitted plans for a supermarket on a neighbouring plot, between Atlantic Street and George Richards Way.
Scott Sharp, divisional director of West, B&Q, said: “We have been in Altrincham for more than 30 years and it is with regret that we announce our intention to close the store.
“We are committed to working with Morrisons to do everything possible to minimise the impact of the closure for our employees, and will continue to serve our Altrincham customers to the highest possible standard over the coming months.”
Morrisons has informed Trafford Council of its intentions for the proposed 25,000 sq ft foodstore.
Dates for a public consultation exhibition on the scheme will be announced as soon as possible and a planning application submitted following the consultation process.
James Brook, head of acquisitions in the north for Morrisons, said: “This agreement with B&Q is great news for Altrincham as well as Morrisons.
"Our new store will create an additional 150 local job opportunities, all with real career and training prospects.
“We’re very excited to have an opportunity to bring our passion and love for fresh food and choice to the town. We believe our unique offer of high quality, fresh food at great prices is what makes us stand out against our competitors.”
