B&M To Close Blackpool Warehouse
Staff at B&M's Blackpool warehouse and distribution centre have been told their jobs are at risk.
Shortly before Christmas, staff were told that the centre was to close and the business transferred to Merseyside. Approximately 128 jobs are expected to be lost as a result of the planned closure of the site, which is located in Squires Gate in the town.
Local press reported that the site has been used as an overflow warehouse since 2010, at which point the current owners had said that they expected to retain a presence in the region 'for the foreseeable future'.
Staff were told that they are in consultation until 30th January and that 'unsustainable costs' led to the planned closure.
Nick Gerrard, Usdaw area organiser said: “This was clearly a devastating announcement for staff, particularly in the run-up to Christmas.
“Blackpool was B&M’s first distribution centre, so there are many long-serving and loyal staff impacted.
“Usdaw is now in the middle of consultation talks, which will run for at least 45 days, where we are evaluating the business case and seeking the best possible outcome for our members.
"In the meantime we are providing Usdaw members with the support, advice and representation they need at this difficult time.”
