B&M set to take over another BHS store
B&M will be bringing more than 40 new jobs to Basildon town centre when they take over the former BHS branch.
The discount retailer has applied to Basildon Council to convert the former BHS shop, which is located in Town Square. B&M already has nearby stores at Southend, Thurrock and Chelmsford.
The BHS department store closed last year when the nationwide chain fell into administration.
The planning documents reveal that 9 full time staff and 36 part time staff would be hired and opening times would be 8.30am to 6pm Monday to Saturday and 10am until 4pm on Sundays and bank holidays.
Andrew Buxton, Labour councillor for St Martin’s ward said: “It is good to have a new shop opening in the town centre, and if it is going to create more jobs that can only be a positive thing. There is one in Lakeside which people say is very popular.
“The closing of British Home Stores was a major loss, so with the building being opened that will be good. It is a large building so while it was empty the area did look rather sad. It is good that they have chosen a town centre location and not one of the out-of-town shopping centres.”
Basildon Council has granted permission for the shopfront to be altered to get rid of the cafe entrance and provide a modern glass facade.
The B&M website says 'We believe that everyone loves a bargain! Our “keep it simple” philosophy and our £1 billion buying power allows us to deliver sensational prices across a broad range of product.
