Barclaycard, which processes nearly £1 in every £3 spent in the UK, has been tracking live consumer spending over the festive sales period and has just released data on Black Friday spending.

Rob Cameron, CEO of Barclaycard Payments:

"It was an outstanding Black Friday, especially compared to last year's record breaking results. We saw strong sales, with transaction value up 16.5 per cent compared to last year.

"Total volume of transactions over the day were also up 7.2 per cent, showing that in a tough economic climate, once again Black Friday has continued to be a fantastic opportunity for retailers and consumers.

"Cyber Monday has also got off to a strong start, with transaction volume up by 6.9 per cent compared to 2018 – it will be interesting to see if this trend continues throughout the rest of the day."

We will update this story with more data as it is made available.
