Argos to create 12,000 new jobs

Variety goods retailer Argos will look to employ an additional 12,000 people over the busy Christmas period this year, it was announced today.

New recruits will be immediately illegible for a ten per cent staff discount, and roles should be available at all of the retailer’s 750 stores across the UK.

Last year Argos employed the same number of temporary staff members and there was an even spread of 4,000 job opportunities in central, northern and southern regions of the country.

Terry Duddy, Managing Director of Argos and CEO of parent firm Home Retail Group, commented: “Argos is a fun, interesting and busy place to be over Christmas so we are excited about finding passionate and enthusiastic staff that can join the team.

“With over 70 million customers passing through our doors over the period, the new recruits will really help us deliver great customer service this Christmas.”

In a new initiative, Argos has teamed up with TUI UK, the parent company of travel firms Thomson and First Choice, to offer winter roles to 500 of its seasonal summer employees.

It is also working with Job Centre Plus to support the UK government’s ‘Get Britain Working’ scheme, a much needed boost at a time when national unemployment has reached 2.49 million.

Argos has a good record of offering permanent positions to temporary staff members who impress during their initial employment with the firm, and one senior colleague who started at the business this way was Bryon McGill.

McGill said: “The atmosphere in store over the Christmas period is fantastic and there is a real team spirit amongst the staff. It’s nice to know that you are helping customers make their Christmas a good one.”
