Retailer Argos is opening its first two digital stores in J Sainsbury PLC supermarkets in Surrey and Cheshire Wednesday, as part of a partnership the two retailers announced at the start of the year.

Argos has teamed up with Sainsbury's to open 10 digital stores this summer in Sainsbury's supermarkets, and is opening the first two today in North Cheam in Surrey and Nantwich in Cheshire.

The smaller, new format Argos digital stores will offer the most popular products for immediate pick-up, while 20,000 products will be available for pick-up within a few hours of placing an order online under a 'order by 1pm for same day collection' guarantee.

"This partnership with Argos is one of a series of steps we are taking to ensure we continue to offer our customers a wide range of products at great value and to make their shopping more convenient. We are looking forward to working with Argos to ensure the best availability and shopping experience for our customers," Sainsbury's Retail & Operations Director Roger Burnley said in a statement.

"Working with Sainsbury's will help us to bring the convenience of the Argos offer to more customers. The new stores are equipped for shopping in the digital age, with tablets that mirror the online shopping experience and staff on hand to help. Around half of Argos' total sales now start online, with around 90% of customers visiting one of 755 stores to pick up their goods," Argos Director of Retail and Customer Operations Steve Carson said.

The remaining eight stores will be opened in West Hove, Crayford, Calcot, Bognor Regis, Durham, Rustington, Drumchapel and Keighley.
