Argos distribution reorganisation threatens 440 Corby warehouse jobs

A reorganisation of a warehouse distribution network has put 440 jobs at risk in Northamptonshire.

Catalogue retailer Argos plans to move its Midlands distribution centre from Wincanton's hub in Corby to Lutterworth in Leicestershire.

Argos is aiming to cut network costs, a Wincanton spokesman said.

"It is proposed that this work will commence in the summer and be complete by the autumn. All affected Corby employees are eligible to transfer."

The retailer's Corby operation will be moved to the Argos site at Magna Park, Leicestershire.

Wincanton is consulting affected employees and their representatives.

They will be offered the possibility of transferring to other Wincanton sites and contracts if they are unable to transfer to Magna Park, the Wincanton spokesman said.

The firm employs about 440 staff in Corby. Unions are expected to comment later.

None of the other Wincanton contract operations at Corby is affected.

This move follows the recent announcements of job losses from Eddie Stobart and Tata Steel in the town.

If plans go ahead it would mean a total of 700 jobs lost in Corby over the past two weeks.
