Argos and Homebase supporting Dementia Awareness Month

Dementia Awareness Month: 9th May to 9th June.

Thousands of Argos and Homebase colleagues across the UK and Ireland will be raising awareness of dementia this month.

A leaflet called '5 things you should know about dementia' will be arriving in stores over the next few weeks to hand out to customers throughout the month.

Argos customers will also be asked to 'round up' their purchases to the nearest pound in order to raise vital funds for Alzheimer's Society, Alzheimer Scotland and The Alzheimer Society of Ireland.

Homebase are going to be hosting garden parties, which are a great way to have fun and encourage people to talk about dementia.

The five things everybody should know about dementia...

1) It's not a natural part of growing old
2) It's caused by diseases of the brain. The most common of these is Alzheimer's.
3) It's not just about losing your memory – it can affect thinking, communicating and doing everyday tasks.
4) It's possible to live well with dementia, at home and in your community.
5) There's more to a person than the dementia.

'It's true that worrying changes nothing and talking changes everything so we're proud to be starting conversations about dementia with people in our local communities. We hope that our charity partnership will help raise awareness of dementia and the support on offer to help people living with the condition stay in their own homes for longer.'

Fundraising will go towards helping thousands of people with dementia and raise awareness of how they can live full lives in their homes and local communities. Together Alzheimer's Society, Alzheimer Scotland and The Alzheimer Society of Ireland are Argos and Homebase's charity partner 2013 – 2015. The money raised by Argos and Homebase colleagues and customers will fund services such as, Singing for the Brain® groups, Dementia Cafes and Dementia Support services around the UK and Ireland.
