Amazon Understood to Have Obtained London Retail Space for Amazon Go Store

Trade publication The Grocer has reported that Amazon has obtained retail space in London for its first non-US Amazon Go store.

At this stage, it is unclear if space for more than one store has been secured, or where the first store might be located.  In February 2017, The Sunday Times reported that Amazon had been looking at central London for its first UK store and, in December 2018, reported that a site on Oxford Street, in London's West End, was of interest.

The first Amazon Go store opened in Seattle in December 2016, allowing Amazon employees the opportunity to test-drive the new, cashierless store format.

Amazon describes the Amazon Go concept as : "... a new kind of store with no checkout required. We created the world’s most advanced shopping technology so you never have to wait in line. With our Just Walk Out Shopping experience, simply use the Amazon Go app to enter the store, take the products you want, and go!"

The company submitted trademark applications to protect the Amazon Go brand in the UK and Europe in December 2016 and is understood to have been seeking sites of between 3,000 and 5,000 square feet in size for the stores.

Amazon is believed to be planning for around 3,000 Amazon Go stores by 2021.
