Amazon to build new fulfilment centre in Bristol

Amazon will create 1,000 new jobs after announcing plans to build a new logistics fulfilment centre in Bristol, which will open in 2018.

It currently operates 13 fulfilment centres across the UK, with plans to build four additional locations in Dunstable, Doncaster, Tilbury and Warrington before the end of 2017.

The new centre in Bristol, expected to be completed in 2018, will mark Amazon’s 18th in the UK and will add 1000 more jobs onto the 24,000 already employed in the country.

The news also comes after Amazon said it would move in to all 15 storeys of the Principal Place building in Shoreditch, east London, so it can double the capacity of its research and development centre from 450 to 900 staff.

The new Bristol warehouse will bring the online retail giant’s total investment in the UK since 2010 to £6.4 billion, as it pushes to expand its local operations.

“We are very excited to expand our network into Bristol, which will in total create more than 1000 new permanent roles with competitive wages and comprehensive benefits starting on day one,” Amazon UK customer fulfilment director Stefano Perego said.

“There are several factors we consider when deciding on where to place a new fulfilment centre, and Bristol offers fantastic infrastructure and talented local people who we look forward to joining the Amazon team.”

Recruitment will begin in 2018 and employees’ wages will start £7.65 per hour, increasing to £8.15 per hour over the first two years.

Jack Lopresti, the local MP for Filton and Bradley Stoke, added: “It is fantastic news that Amazon is opening a new fulfilment centre in Severn Beach.

“This will bring more jobs to our area and offer careers with training opportunities, helping the local economy to grow.

“An international outward looking company like Amazon will help us maximise the fantastic opportunities for our region after Brexit. I look forward to visiting the site in the future when it’s operational to learn more about Amazon’s ambitions for Severn Beach area.”
