Amazon recruiting to fill 10,000 temporary roles
Pure play e-tailer Amazon has announced today that it is to create 10,000 jobs over the Christmas period to support high demand.
More than 10,000 temporary workers will be inducted across its fulfilment centres in the UK, though the e-tailer pointed out that it has taken thousands of part-time employees into full-time work over the last three years.
Recently, Amazon opened its latest fulfilment centre, its eighth in the UK, in Hemel Hempstead, creating 600 jobs while it is also poised to create an additional 2,000 permanent roles at three further British centres over the next two years.
Last month, Amazon unveiled the latest two additions to its Kindle family and it is expected that these products will prove particularly popular over the festive season.
“On our busiest shopping day last Christmas, we saw customers order a total of three million items during one 24-hour period at a rate of 35 items every second,” said Catherine McDermott, Director of Operations at Amazon.
“We look forward to welcoming a good number of new faces to our centres over the coming weeks as well as welcoming back temporary employees who join us every year over the Christmas period.”
Last Christmas during its peak period, Amazon’s UK fulfilment centres shipped over 2.1 million units over the course of 24 hours, a total of 1,124 tonnes of goods and as such a delivery truck left a centre once every two minutes and 45 seconds and it is expected that the e-tailer will replicate that success in the coming months.
McDermott added: “We are a company in growth and when we have permanent positions to fill, it’s the top performing temporary employees that we look to.”
