  • 66% of British adults will be balancing topping up savings and spending
  • Holidays top the spending wish list this year for 37%
  • Gen Zs buck the trend: 40% will make saving their top focus for 2025

2025 is shaping up to be the year of smart money moves. With everyday prices creeping up, it’s no surprise that UK consumers are putting saving at the top of their to-do lists next year.

A new survey by VoucherCodes.co.uk, the UK’s most trusted voucher site, reveals more people are focused on saving (24%) than spending (9%) in 2025. But, here’s the twist – for the majority of Brits, it’s all about finding that sweet spot - with 66% saying balance is the real goal.

Holidays are the top priority for 37% of Brits this year, with one-third planning to spend more on trips than they did last year. It seems Brits can’t resist a good getaway – the average holiday budget comes in at £709.26, with beach holidays (24%), European holidays (17%) and staycations (16%) the top choices.

However, holidays aside, Brits are being sensible with their spending in 2025, as a one-fifth plan to prioritise home improvements (21%). On the renovation radar are sprucing up bedrooms (20%), outdoor spaces (20%), and living rooms (18%). Additionally, 10% of Brits will prioritise buying a home in 2024, with the number rising to 20% for 18-24 and 25-34 year olds.

Food and dining are the nation's third biggest spending priority (13%) with a whopping 64% of people planning to eat out at least once a month, and another 65% planning to order a takeaway at least once a month.

Gen Z – the saving generation

Gen Z is flipping the script on stereotypes. Nearly 40% of 18-24 year-olds are prioritising long-term saving over splurging. That’s a big contrast to older generations, who often think of Gen Z as impulsive spenders. But let’s not write Gen Z off as total savers - over one-fifth plan to go on holiday more than once a month (22%), and they also plan to boost their spending on luxuries, including tech (47%), fine dining (27%) and high-end fashion (29%).

The gender divide

When it comes to financial outlooks, men are far more optimistic about their finances heading into 2025, with 17% describing themselves as ‘very optimistic’ compared to just 8% of women. This divide extends to how extra cash would be used - 15% of men would invest it, compared to only 4% of women.

Hunting for deals like pros

In 2025, Brits are turning bargain-hunting into a hobby. Before making a purchase, over two-fifths of us plan to shop around for the best deals (42%), and over one-third are all about tracking down discount codes (35%).

Anita Naik, savings expert at VoucherCodes.co.uk, comments:

“Our data shows a clear trend that Britons are becoming savvier than ever with their money, using deal-hunting tactics and careful planning to make every penny count. As we head into 2025, shoppers are prioritising value in everything from holidays to everyday purchases, finding a happy medium between saving for the future and making the most of the present. At VoucherCodes.co.uk, we’re here to help them achieve that balance with deals and discounts to suit every need.”
